Fifteen interns spent 10 weeks with the American Constructors' family as a part of the company's summer internship program.

The program began more than two decades ago with a focus on hands-on experience and mentorship. At the time, the company picked only one or two interns each year. Today, that focus remains the same. But now, the program regularly recruits over a dozen students from the nation’s top construction and engineering programs.

At American Constructors, internships are not just another line for students to add to their resume. Each summer is an opportunity to allow our greatest minds to foster the innovators of tomorrow and vice versa.

“I will be able to apply concepts I learn this summer to my classes,” Ryan Perez, a Texas A&M University student and intern at Killeen High School #6, said, "which will make what I am learning in school more valuable.”

The Selection Process

Company recruiters select prospective interns through job fairs held at college campuses in the Fall and Spring. After these job fairs, internship candidates begin the interview and hiring process with our staff. Upon selection, American Constructors assigns each intern a job site and a mentor to provide one-on-one guidance during the program.

What Sets Us Apart

Our mentors serve as a key, unique component of the American Constructors summer internship program. Each mentor works closely with their intern to establish and implement an individualized work plan. By doing so, each intern gains the specific skills and experience they need to succeed in the construction industry.

This year, interns are working at public and private sites across Austin, Temple, Killeen, De Valle, Dripping Springs, Kyle and Leander.

“I love the hands-on work that comes with being in the field on a job site, as well as being able to work on projects that are beneficial to the communities I serve,” Dalton Willbrant, a Kansas State student and intern at the Baty Elementary School Renovations, said.

Five weeks into the program, each intern receives a mid-point evaluation from their mentor to track growth and make any needed adjustments to their individualized program. At the end of the summer, mentors evaluate their interns once more. The internship experience also provides an in-depth interview process that can lead to full-time employment at American Constructors if it is a fit for both the intern and the company.

Training, Tours and More

This year, interns participated in training and fellowship at Spare Time alongside field engineers. The group also toured three job sites across the American Constructors service region. This month the group will once again gather with field engineers for an end of program celebration.

Jonathan Saenz, an intern at Leander ISD Elementary School #29, said his time with American Constructors allowed him to get hands-on experience on projects from start to finish.

“This experience will give me a good foundation to the start of my career in construction,” Saenz, a University of Texas Rio Grande Valley student, added.
